Basics for Getting Started
Ready to begin your needlepoint journey? The first step is choosing a canvas. If this is your very first project, we recommend selecting a simple design. Many beginners find that a 13-mesh canvas is a great place to start because the holes are slightly larger and easier to see than finer mesh canvases.
Your Beginner Needlepoint Checklist
✓ Choose a Canvas
- Start with a design you love—you're more likely to finish a project that excites you!
- If you're a beginner, consider a simpler design with larger sections to stitch.
- A 13-mesh canvas is often the easiest place to start.
✓ Select Your Threads
- Match your thread colors to the painted areas on the canvas.
- Most canvases can be stitched using a variety of fibers, including cotton, silk, wool, or specialty threads.
- Don't be afraid to customize! Many stitchers choose a different background color or add a decorative fiber for extra texture and sparkle.
✓ Gather Your Supplies
- Stretcher bars or a frame
- Tapestry needle (size 20 for 13-mesh and size 22 for 18-mesh)
- Small embroidery scissors
- Needle threader (optional but helpful!)
- A clip-on book light or neck light is also helpful ... especially for stitching in the evenings!
- Project bag to keep everything organized.
✓ Learn the Basic Stitch
- The Continental Tent Stitch is the most common beginner stitch and works well for most projects.
- Once you're comfortable, you can explore decorative stitches to add texture and interest.
A Few Helpful Tips
- Buy a little extra thread if possible. Dye lots can vary, and it's always easier to have more than not enough.
- Good lighting makes stitching much more enjoyable.
- Don't worry if the back of your canvas isn't perfect -- it's the front that counts!
- Ask questions. Every experienced stitcher was once a beginner.
